Spring 2016

It was intriguing last November to note that a black man had succeeded a white woman as Presiding Bishop of The Episcopal Church in the United States. This had to be a very special individual. And so it proved, when the Most Revd Michael Curry responded with such grace and confidence to the humiliation of TEC at the Primates’ meeting in January. We offer two views of the new PB, one by a TEC priest who is also black, one by a white woman who worked with him closely in North Carolina.

Autumn 2015

Colour pictures are on offer once again in this issue of SEARCH – this time to illustrate Dr Gesa Thiessen’s reflections on art as theology. The Church’s emphasis on words is too exclusive, she contends. Sometimes the visual image speaks more strongly to our spirit.

We were delighted that the Search "Repitching the Tent" Colloquium on re-thinking liturgical space went so well in April. Our warmest thanks are due not only to those who led it and those who responded but to Dr Margaret Daly-Denton, who master-minded the event.

A REVIEW of the work and witness of the Christian Renewal Centre, founded 40 years ago last autumn, opens this issue of Search – a tribute to the late Cecil Kerr and his leadership in reconciliation between Protestant and Catholic communities and spiritual renewal across the denominations in Ireland. As Patrick McGlinchey writes: “The legacy of the CRC challenges us to leave room for the unsettling ministry of the Holy Spirit”.

Autumn 2014

With all the excitement and negotiations about Search’s ‘new look’, it was quite a gift that articles for Autumn 2014 came in as easily as they did. With three anniversaries claiming space in our pages – the outbreak of World War One, the bi- and tri -centenaries of our two leading missionary bodies, and the launch of auxiliary ministry training in the Church of Ireland 40 years ago – the remaining articles had to be chosen with care.

It was not planned that way, but so strong is the concern around the Church today with matters of reconciliation – between groups within the Church, between individuals, or between Churches – that every article contributed for this issue has something to say on the matter.
