The Divine in Music & Theology

THEOLOGIANS have investigated various methods for engaging with music, often within the framework of a theology of culture. Music as a cultural material introduces unique considerations to theology. This article offers an analysis of some, though not all, of the theological approaches to music that connect to liturgical theology.

Several scholars have ventured down the musicology alley to approach music theologically. Some consider music as a theologically significant or revelatory experience, allowing it to introduce new insights and challenge established beliefs; others see music as a medium that conveys existing theological truths, echoing ideas already presented in theology, scripture, or other art forms. This short paper presents a condensed comparison between the two perspectives that, while fundamentally different are not mutually exclusive.
