Facing identity issues today
IDENTITY-CENTRED ISSUES have recently come to the fore in the public conversation: the MeToo and Black Lives Matter movements have raised questions of gender and race, and changes in marriage, abortion and gender recognition legislation have led to discussions about sexual and gender identity.
We all encounter these issues in the course of ordinary life. Perhaps we hear a report about the death of another African American at the hands of the police on the six o’clock news or we find our colleagues discussing a radio programme about gender-neutral bathrooms in schools.
